How Hard Is It to Maintain an RV?

Reputable RV dealers are clear about the need for RV maintenance. Your RV is a big investment, and protecting that investment means setting up a routine that locates problems and fixes them as a matter of course. Because your RV is a very complex machine, there are a few areas that need regular maintenance, including these primary systems.

Roof

RV technicians know that the worst danger faced by your RV’s roof is found in your own yard. When your RV is parked, it is more vulnerable to falling branches or limbs blown about by heavy winds. RV roofs are susceptible to punctures and scraping. To inspect it properly, you will need a ladder or some other way to reach the top without actually putting any weight on it.

Plumbing Systems

Hot is on the left, cold is on the right, and wastewater flows downhill. Unfortunately, that old cliche barely scratches the surface of things that can go wrong with your RV plumbing. Without experience and the right tools, inspecting and repairing your plumbing should be left to a qualified RV center. Very few people have a dump station at home for flushing the holding tanks, so taking your RV to a reputable dealer is the most efficient way to go.

Electrical Systems

Your Motorhome has a dual electrical system. The DC circuitry operates the cab compartment, the engine, and operational signals. The AC system operates the living area. Unless you are adept in electrical theory and have a schematic of your RV wiring, this part of your RV maintenance is going to be extremely difficult and could result in short circuits, burnt fuses, and other mishaps.

Chassis and Engine

Leading RV dealers will have certified technicians on their staff who are experienced in RV repair and maintenance. This includes regular tune-ups, changing the fluids, inspecting the tires, operational systems, and more. The best RV dealer for this job is one with extra-large bays that can accommodate an RV. If you have an older RV, you may discover that getting parts can be challenging without the established network of suppliers that are available through authorized repair centers.

The complexity of an RV means that special care and knowledge are necessary for proper maintenance. Even more importantly, working on the RV yourself or having work performed by an unauthorized RV dealer will void your warranty. The best plan is to talk to your RV dealer about a regular service contract, or at the very least take your RV in for maintenance at least once a year.
